1973 was quite a busy year. Richard Nixon was President and Spiro Agnew was Vice President, well that is until he resigned and Gerald Ford became the Vice President. Watergate was in all the headlines and spelling the end of the Nixon years. The US and North Vietnam signed a peace agreement our troops left. The Supreme Court also ruled on Roe v. Wade that year.
1973 also saw the dedication of the World Trade Center as well as the opening of the Sears Tower and the Sydney Opera House. Skylab was launched, and the first cell phone call was made. Secretariat won the Triple Crown, and Billy Jean King played Bobby Riggs at the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match.
Stamps were 8¢ and a gallon of gas was only 40¢… that is until the price of oil increased 200%. Eggs, by the way, were 45¢.
At the movies we watched “The Exorcist”, “Deliverance”, “Live and Let Die”, “Paper Moon”, “Last Tango in Paris”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “American Graffiti”, “Lady Sings the Blues”, and “The Sting”. We not only listen to FM radio, but still tuned in to WFIL on the AM band. Our top 10 hits included “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree” (Tony Orlando and Dawn), “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” (Jim Croce), “Killing Me Softly With His Song” (Roberta Flack), “Let’s Get It On” (Marvin Gaye), “My Love” (Paul McCartney and Wings), “Why Me” (Kris Kristofferson), “Crocodile Rock” (Elton John), “Will It Go Round in Circles” (Billy Preston), “You’re So Vain” (Carly Simon), and “Touch Me In the Morning” (Diana Ross). Oh yes, Pink Floyd released “Dark Side of the Moon”, and our senior prom featured Led Zeplin’s “Stairway to Heaven”.
At home we were watching “The Odd Couple”, “The Partridge Family”, “Columbo”, “Masterpiece Theatre”, “McMillan and Wife”, “M*A*S*H”, “Sanford and Son”, “The Bob Newhart Show”, “The Price Is Right”, “The Waltons”, “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In”, “All in the Family”, “Mary Tyler Moore”, and “The Six Million Dollar Man” on TV.
Yes, it was a busy year with a lot of important events. But the most important event happened in Royersford in June of that year. That was when Spring-ford High School’s Class of 1973 graduated!
This site is dedicated to that class and to the teachers and staff who helped us make that day happen.
